SERVICES

Oftentimes people are unaware of habits and patterns that are interfering with them living the life they desire.

People tend to repeat behaviours because:

  • They are familiar and even if they do not have the desired outcome, the outcome is more predictable than doing something new.

  • These behaviours were learned in childhood and reinforced over time making them more strongly wired in the brain.

  • These actions may have historically helped with survival and although the behaviours are no longer required for present life they have been practiced over time and are therefore strongly wired in the brain.

  • People may repeat behaviours that are consistent with unconscious negative beliefs they have about themselves or the world and therefore by repeating actions consistent with these beliefs they are inadvertently reinforcing these beliefs.

In order to stop these patterns, we must repair the wounds that caused them.

I am trained in and offer evidence based individual therapy while maintaining the heart of human connection. My work assists clients to cultivate self-awareness of habitual patterns, compassionate healing of the wounds that created these patterns, and the opportunity to choose different actions moving forward.

 APPROACHES

Lifespan Integration (LI)

LI is a body-based therapy devoted to addressing present and historic trauma. LI is founded upon the innate ability for the body and mind to heal itself. During LI clients are gently guided through the story of their lives, during which themes and new awareness typically emerge. LI works at a neural level to change patterns of response, creating awareness and sustained emotional and behavioural change. Oftentimes after LI clients find themselves spontaneously responding differently to current life stressors and challenges.

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a highly-researched and proven effective psychotherapy used primary to treat traumatic memories and injurious life experiences. In EMDR clients are guided through brief exposures of emotionally distressing material while simultaneously focusing on an external stimulus, such as eye moments, tapping, or audio stimulation. Through this process distressing thoughts and emotions are blended with more adaptive thoughts and emotions. After EMDR clients often experience relief from the distress caused by these traumatic memories.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

DBT is an evidence-based model for therapy focused on assisting clients to live in the present, cope with stress effectively, regulate emotions, and improve relationships. During DBT clients are offered the opportunity to assess unhelpful patterns in their life, acquire new skills to handle these situations differently, and opportunities to practice and refine these skills in the real world.

Why I use these approaches:

Donald Hebb used the phrase “neurons that fire together wire together” to refer to the phenomena that every experience, thought, feeling, and sensation activates thousands of neurons in your brain to create networks. When these experiences are repeated through time these networks get stronger and more ingrained in the brain. What this means is that strong or habitual experiences, thoughts, feelings, and sensations actually change your brain. Thankfully, our brain has the ability to change throughout our lives, which means that although it may sound daunting, with new experiences, thoughts, and feelings you can rewire your brain to strengthen more adaptive ways of being.
